Chemical Peel Recovery Day by Day: Peeling Stages

A chemical peel heals in stages, and the calendar depends on depth: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) gives 1 to 7 days for a light peel, 7 to 14 days for a medium peel and 14 to 21 days for a deep one. The first day or two bring redness — plus swelling after a medium peel — then the flaking stage, then settling skin. Here is the process day by day, by peel depth.

Key takeaways

  • Healing time depends on peel depth: AAD gives 1 to 7 days for a light peel, 7 to 14 for a medium peel and 14 to 21 for a deep peel.
  • After a medium peel, swelling worsens for 48 hours, then the skin crusts and peels off in 7 to 14 days.
  • Scratching the treated skin or picking off scabs raises infection and scarring risk dramatically, per AAD.
  • A deep peel is done under general anesthesia in a surgical setting.
  • AAD says to contact the dermatologist if the skin burns, itches or swells.

Day 1 to 2: redness first

Day 1 and 2 look different at each depth, because peels are classified by how deep a wound they create.

After a light peel, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says skin will be red, and it gives light peels 1 to 7 days to heal.

After a medium peel, skin is red and swollen, the swelling worsens for 48 hours and the eyelids may swell.

After a deep peel, AAD says the area will be bandaged.

Makeup timing already differs at this stage: AAD says makeup usually goes back on immediately or the next day after a light peel.

A medium peel's plan also includes antiviral medication for 10 to 14 days and a required follow-up visit.

Days 3 to 5: the peeling stage

AAD's timeline does not pin peeling to an exact day.

On a light peel, AAD says that once the redness disappears, scaling may develop and lasts 3 to 7 days.

By day 3, the 48 hours of worsening swelling that AAD describes for a medium peel are over; AAD says the skin crusts and peels off in 7 to 14 days, and that blisters can form and break open along the way.

A deep peel in this stretch is still bandaged, since AAD counts 14 to 21 days to heal.

Light peel

  • Scaling may develop once the redness disappears
  • Scaling lasts 3 to 7 days

Medium peel

  • The 48 hours of worsening swelling are over by day 3
  • Blisters can form and break open
  • Skin crusts and peels off in 7 to 14 days

One chemical peel aftercare warning runs through this stretch: AAD counts scratching the treated skin or picking off scabs among the things that raise infection and scarring risk dramatically.

Day 7 and beyond

Day 7 is the end of AAD's healing window for a light peel — redness first, then scaling for 3 to 7 days.

Day 7 falls inside the medium peel's 7-to-14-day healing window: AAD gives medium peels 7 to 14 days to heal, allows camouflage makeup after 5 to 7 days, and calls for total sun avoidance until the skin has healed, plus the follow-up visit.

A deep peel is still early at day 7.

AAD counts 14 to 21 days to heal with the area bandaged and 4 to 6 soaks a day, no makeup for at least 14 days, antiviral medication for 10 to 14 days, total sun avoidance for 3 to 6 months, and 2 to 3 weeks recuperating at home.

Even after the skin has closed, some effects can linger.

AAD lists persistent redness that may last for months, temporary skin darkening, and lighter skin color after medium and deep peels among chemical peel side effects.

Recovery time by peel depth

The day-by-day above only makes sense once the depth is fixed.

A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology classifies peels by wound depth: superficial peels penetrate the epidermis only, medium-depth peels the full epidermis and papillary dermis, and deep peels down to the mid-reticular dermis.

That depth decides the calendar.

AAD's recovery figures by depth:

Peel depthHealing time (AAD)What the skin doesMakeup
Superficial (light)1 to 7 daysRedness, then scaling that lasts 3 to 7 daysUsually immediately or the next day
Medium7 to 14 daysRedness and swelling that worsens for 48 hours; blisters can form and break; skin crusts and peels off in 7 to 14 daysCamouflage makeup after 5 to 7 days
Deep14 to 21 daysArea bandaged; 4 to 6 soaks a day; 2 to 3 weeks recuperating at homeNo makeup for at least 14 days

Two things hide in that table.

Depth is not the same as strength: 35% TCA is a medium-depth peel with 7 to 14 days of healing, and only low-strength TCA (10 to 20%) is used as a superficial peel, so one "TCA peel" menu line can cover different recoveries (see our TCA peel guide for the strength bands).

And downtime is not optional for the deeper tiers — AAD states that after a medium or deep peel, you will have downtime.

AAD also notes that 3 to 5 light peels, every 2 to 5 weeks, may be needed.

For what each peel type contains and does, see our chemical peel guide.

Deep peels are a surgical-setting procedure

AAD says a deep peel is done under general anesthesia, in a surgical setting, one small section at a time to limit effects on the heart and lungs. Phenol, a deep-peel agent, is highly arrhythmogenic: the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology review reports that people with cardiac arrhythmia or liver or kidney dysfunction should not have phenol peels, and that cardiac monitoring is recommended.

When peeling is abnormal

Peeling fits AAD's normal timeline.

The sensations around it are what to watch: AAD says to contact the dermatologist if the skin burns, itches or swells.

Fits the timeline

  • Redness, then flaking or peeling
  • Healing within the window for the peel's depth

Contact the dermatologist

  • Skin burns
  • Skin itches
  • Skin swells

Some outcomes belong on the side-effect list rather than the recovery timeline.

AAD lists persistent redness that may last for months, temporary skin darkening, lighter skin color after medium and deep peels, and scarring — very rare when a dermatologist does the peel.

ASPS adds the overall picture: peels are usually very safe when done by a qualified provider, but infection or scarring — very rare — can occur, some skin types risk temporary or permanent lightening or darkening, and people who have had cold sores risk reactivation and should ask about preventive medication beforehand.

Where the peel came from matters as much as the peeling itself.

On July 30, 2024, the FDA warned consumers not to buy or use certain chemical peel products sold online without professional supervision.

None of this is a diagnosis.

If a recovery is not tracking the timeline for the peel's depth, the licensed provider who did the peel is the one who can tell normal flaking from a problem.

The FDA warning on DIY peel products

On July 30, 2024, the FDA warned consumers not to buy or use certain chemical peel products without professional supervision. The agency has not approved any chemical peel products, and says high-concentration TCA, glycolic, salicylic and lactic acid peels sold online can cause severe burns, infection, color changes and disfiguring scars.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a chemical peel take to heal?

The American Academy of Dermatology's healing figures depend on depth: 1 to 7 days for a light peel, 7 to 14 days for a medium peel and 14 to 21 days for a deep peel.

A deep peel also means 2 to 3 weeks recuperating at home, a bandaged area and no makeup for at least 14 days.

Ask the provider who does your peel which depth you are booking, because the same product name can sit at different depths.

When does peeling start after a chemical peel?

AAD's timeline does not pin peeling to an exact day.

For a light peel, redness comes first, and scaling may develop once the redness disappears, lasting 3 to 7 days.

After a medium peel, the skin crusts and peels off across its 7-to-14-day healing window, while swelling worsens for the first 48 hours.

Your provider's aftercare plan applies to your peel's depth.

Can you wear makeup while a chemical peel heals?

It depends on depth, per AAD: after a light peel, makeup usually goes back on immediately or the next day; after a medium peel, camouflage makeup is an option after 5 to 7 days; after a deep peel, no makeup for at least 14 days.

AAD also warns that applying makeup before the skin has healed is among the things that raise infection and scarring risk dramatically.

Are chemical peel products FDA-approved?

No. The FDA stated on July 30, 2024 that it has not approved any chemical peel products, and it warned consumers not to buy or use certain peels without professional supervision.

The agency says consumers should only consider using chemical peel products under the supervision of a dermatologist or licensed and trained practitioner.
