How We Rank Utah Med Spas

We rank Utah med spas by Google rating, weighted by how many people left one.

Med Spa Rules in Utah

What Utah law and its licensing boards say about who may do med spa treatments, each with its source. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

  1. Utah law defines a cosmetic medical procedure to include using cosmetic medical devices for ablative or nonablative procedures and injecting a medication or substance, such as a neurotoxin or a filler, for cosmetic purposes. [1]
  2. Utah has a specific statute on supervising cosmetic medical procedures, Utah Code 58-1-506, and failing to comply with it is unprofessional conduct. [2]
  3. Utah's cosmetology law defines a cosmetic medical device as a nonablative energy device that alters living tissue, including Class IIIb and IV lasers, IPL, radiofrequency and lipolytic devices. [3]
  4. For nonablative cosmetic procedures other than hair removal, a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant with an unrestricted license must develop a treatment plan and evaluate the patient in person or by live telemedicine visit before a treatment series begins. [2]
  5. The supervisor of a nonablative cosmetic procedure in Utah must be a physician or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with an unrestricted license. [2]
  6. A registered nurse or master esthetician may perform a nonablative procedure under general supervision, meaning the supervisor authorizes it, is within 60 minutes or 60 miles, and can come in person in a timely way for complications. [2]
  7. An esthetician or practical nurse needs direct supervision for a nonablative procedure, meaning the supervisor is present and available face to face. [2]
  8. Anyone a supervisor delegates a nonablative cosmetic procedure to must have at least 80 hours of documented education and experience, covering topics such as skin physiology, laser physics and safety, complication management and CPR. [2]
  9. For laser hair removal, the supervising physician or APRN sets the treatment plan, and a hair removal review must be done before treatment by the supervisor or a physician assistant, registered nurse, master esthetician or electrologist. [2]
  10. Registered nurses, master estheticians and electrologists may perform laser hair removal under general supervision, and physician assistants follow the Utah Physician Assistant Act. [2]
  11. Practical nurses, estheticians and medical assistants may perform laser hair removal only under indirect supervision, with the supervisor on site. [2]
  12. A cosmetic medical facility must post the supervising provider's name and display a copy of their license on the wall. [2]
  13. Patients must receive written information naming the supervisor and the person performing the procedure, along with a phone number that is answered within 24 hours. [2]
  14. Utah law lets a licensed APRN prescribe or administer prescription drugs, including Schedule II through V controlled substances, and that section states no collaboration requirement. [4]
  15. You can check the license of a Utah physician, APRN, physician assistant, nurse, esthetician, master esthetician or electrologist on the Division of Professional Licensing's Licensee Lookup and Verification System. [5]
