Med Spa Rules in Vermont

What Vermont law and its licensing boards say about who may do med spa treatments, each with its source. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

  1. Vermont's Office of Professional Regulation and its medical, nursing and pharmacy boards say Vermont has no laws or regulations written specifically for medical spas, which follow the same laws as all spas and medical practices. [1]
  2. Vermont law says esthetics does not include any practice that is the practice of medicine, and it expressly leaves out injections of any substance and the use of lasers. [2]
  3. Vermont regulators say medical and osteopathic physicians may delegate medical tasks only within the delegate's licensed scope and under the physician's control, and delegating to someone who is not qualified is unprofessional conduct. [1]
  4. Because Vermont's definition of esthetics excludes laser use, estheticians may not perform laser treatments under their esthetics license. [2]
  5. Vermont regulators say only physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses and naturopathic physicians with a prescribing endorsement may prescribe saline IV products. [1]
  6. Vermont regulators say registered nurses, practical nurses, nursing assistants, cosmetologists and estheticians may not prescribe any drugs, including IV saline. [1]
  7. Vermont regulators say IVs may be given only by those prescribers, registered nurses, and certain practical nurses with documented competency under direct supervision, and not by nursing assistants, cosmetologists or estheticians, even with a medical director on site. [1]
  8. Vermont regulators say IV clinic standing orders are not valid prescriptions, because a valid prescription needs a practitioner-patient relationship, an appropriate evaluation, a diagnosis and a treatment plan for the individual patient. [1]
  9. Vermont regulators say mixing vitamins or minerals into IV saline is compounding, and nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners may compound only in situations that do not include IV hydration clinics or medical spas. [1]
  10. Vermont advanced practice registered nurses with fewer than 24 months and 2,400 hours of practice in their initial role and population focus must work under a formal collaborative agreement, and after that they may practice without one. [3]
  11. You can look up a Vermont nurse's license with the Office of Professional Regulation's Find a Professional search. [4]
