How We Rank Maine Med Spas

We rank Maine med spas by Google rating, weighted by how many people left one.

A 5.0 from 1,400 reviews ranks above a 5.0 from 12, because each rating is blended toward a 4.6 baseline until it has about 25 reviews behind it.

The statewide list only includes spas with at least 20 Google reviews, which 90 of the 170 Maine listings have.

No spa pays to be listed or to rank higher.

Med Spas in Maine: Questions People Ask

Are med spas regulated in Maine?

Yes. Since July 14, 2026, a joint rule called Chapter 15 from Maine's medical, osteopathic and nursing boards sets standards for med spas, medical aesthetic businesses and IV therapy businesses.

It covers businesses offering neurotoxins, dermal fillers, laser treatments and medical weight loss.

Only physicians, physician associates and APRNs with prescriptive authority may evaluate, diagnose and prescribe there.

Who can do Botox in Maine?

Under Maine's Chapter 15, only a physician, physician associate or APRN with prescriptive authority may evaluate you, diagnose and prescribe at a med spa, and they cannot delegate that to a registered nurse.

Maine law lets registered nurses carry out treatment prescribed by a licensed prescriber.

Licensees may not delegate giving medications to unlicensed staff.

Do I need an exam before Botox in Maine?

Generally, yes.

Maine's Chapter 15 covers businesses offering neurotoxins and requires a physician, physician associate or APRN to do an in-person interview and physical exam for each patient.

Telehealth is allowed only if it is enough for an informed diagnosis, and an online questionnaire does not count.

What is the best city for med spas in Maine?

Portland has the most listings (14), followed by Scarborough (11), South Portland (10) and Falmouth (8).

Med Spa Rules in Maine

What Maine law and its licensing boards say about who may do med spa treatments, each with its source. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

  1. Maine's Board of Licensure in Medicine, Board of Osteopathic Licensure and State Board of Nursing adopted a joint rule, Chapter 15, setting standards for medical spas, medical aesthetic businesses and IV therapy businesses, effective July 14, 2026. [1]
  2. Chapter 15 covers businesses offering neurotoxins, dermal fillers, laser treatments and medical weight loss, as well as med spas offering aesthetic procedures that need no sedation and aim to improve appearance. [1]
  3. Maine's medical and nursing boards say a physician, physician associate or APRN may own, invest in or serve as medical director of a med spa, but none of those roles alone creates the patient relationship required before prescribing or giving drugs. [1]
  4. The boards say only physicians, physician associates and APRNs with prescriptive authority may evaluate, diagnose and prescribe at a med spa, and they cannot hand that authority to a registered nurse or anyone else without prescriptive authority. [1]
  5. The boards bar licensees from delegating examination, nursing assessment, diagnosis, prescribing or giving medications to unlicensed staff at med spas, and treat using standing orders for individualized care there as unprofessional conduct. [1]
  6. Maine law defines professional nursing to include carrying out the medical regimen prescribed by a licensed professional acting within their authority to prescribe. [2]
  7. Under current Maine law, a physician may delegate customary tasks that are under the physician's control and need no license to trained staff, must make sure they are done safely, and is legally liable for them. [3]
  8. From January 1, 2027, physicians and physician associates may delegate such tasks under the same conditions and remain legally liable, but this delegation rule does not apply to registered nurses working under nursing law. [4]
  9. From January 1, 2027, Maine's new Medical Practice Act creates a single Maine Board of Medicine to license allopathic physicians, osteopathic physicians and physician associates. [4]
  10. The boards generally require a physician, physician associate or APRN to interview and examine each med spa patient in person, allow telehealth only if it is enough for an informed diagnosis, and reject online questionnaires as an exam. [1]
  11. Maine's legal definition of the practice of aesthetics covers skin care with cosmetic preparations or skin-care devices, makeup, lashes and brow tinting, and excludes diagnosing or treating any skin condition. [5]
  12. Maine licenses electrologists to remove hair permanently by applying electricity to the hair follicle, and that definition does not mention lasers or light-based hair removal. [6]
  13. The boards say IV fluids, even plain saline, may be given only after an exam and diagnosis by a physician, physician associate or APRN who supervises the treatment, and drips must be individually ordered, not picked from a menu. [1]
  14. The boards say walk-in, mobile and concierge IV services do not qualify for the sterile compounding 'immediate use' exception, and in-office compounding for patients must be done by a licensed physician. [1]
  15. When a med spa prescriber orders a drug on the FDA shortage list for elective use, such as a GLP-1 during a shortage, the boards require a note in the record explaining why its use is supported. [1]
  16. Under Maine law, until the State Board of Nursing adopts rules setting practice standards, a certified nurse practitioner must practice at least 24 months under the supervision of a physician or supervising nurse practitioner, or be employed by a clinic or hospital with a physician medical director. [2]
  17. You can check a Maine physician or physician assistant license through License Verification on the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine website. [7]
  18. You can check a Maine nurse license, including RN, LPN and APRN, on Nursys QuickConfirm, and Maine is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. [8]
