How We Rank Florida Med Spas

We rank Florida med spas by Google rating, weighted by how many people left one.

A 5.0 from 1,400 reviews ranks above a 5.0 from 12, because each rating is blended toward a 4.6 baseline until it has about 25 reviews behind it.

The statewide list only includes spas with at least 20 Google reviews, which 4,370 of the 6,558 Florida listings have.

No spa pays to be listed or to rank higher.

Practices wholly owned by certain licensed health care practitioners, such as physicians and APRNs, are exempt from that license.

Who can do laser hair removal in Florida?

Non-physicians doing laser or light-based hair removal under electrolysis protocols must be trained and work under the direct supervision of a Florida physician.

The electrologist's written protocol must include a first exam and assessment by a Florida-licensed physician.

Med Spa Rules in Florida

What Florida law and its licensing boards say about who may do med spa treatments, each with its source. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

  1. Florida requires many health care clinics to hold a clinic license from AHCA, and each licensed clinic must appoint a medical director or clinic director. [1]
  2. Practices wholly owned by certain licensed health care practitioners, such as physicians and APRNs, or by such a practitioner plus close family when a licensed owner supervises the business, are exempt from the clinic license. [2]
  3. Florida's medical practice act allows registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to provide services under the direct supervision and control of a licensed physician who gives specific direction and final approval. [3]
  4. A Florida APRN who is not registered for autonomous practice must work under an established protocol with a supervising physician, kept on site where the APRN practices. [4]
  5. A physician who supervises an APRN or PA at an off-site office that mainly provides dermatologic or aesthetic skin care, with no physician on site, must be board certified or board eligible in dermatology or plastic surgery. [5]
  6. That physician may supervise only one such office besides their primary location, and the office must be within 25 miles or in a contiguous county. [5]
  7. A physician who supervises an off-site office must post a schedule of the hours the physician is present and the hours the office is open without the physician. [5]
  8. The Florida Board of Medicine requires an electrologist's written laser hair removal protocol to include an initial consultation with an exam and assessment by a Florida-licensed physician (MD or DO). [6]
  9. Non-physicians doing laser or light-based hair removal under electrolysis protocols must be trained and work under the direct supervision and responsibility of a Florida physician. [5]
  10. Offices whose only service is laser hair removal by an APRN or PA are exempt from Florida's off-site supervision limits. [5]
  11. The Florida Board of Medicine says a licensed electrologist may do laser or light-based hair removal only with specified training and certification, under a physician's direct supervision on the premises or by real-time telehealth within 150 miles. [6]
  12. The Board of Medicine also limits a physician to supervising no more than four electrologists. [6]
  13. Florida law lists facials as a cosmetology specialty, done by people who hold a specialty registration under the Board of Cosmetology law. [7]
  14. Under Florida statute, skin care services cover the body other than the head, face and scalp, are limited to applying and removing preparations with a sponge, brush or cloth, and must be done by a licensed cosmetologist or facial specialist in a licensed salon, and chemical peels may be peeled off by hand. [7]
  15. The Florida Board of Nursing says an IV-certified LPN who meets competency requirements may give IV therapy under the direction of a registered nurse or other health care practitioner, subject to employer approval. [8]
  16. Florida allows autonomous APRN practice only in primary care (family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine), so an APRN doing aesthetic work in Florida practices under a physician protocol. [9]
  17. You can check a Florida MD, DO, APRN, PA, RN or electrologist license on the Florida Department of Health MQA License Verification portal at https://mqa-internet.doh.state.fl.us/MQASearchServices/HealthCareProviders. [10]
