How We Rank Idaho Med Spas

We rank Idaho med spas by Google rating, weighted by how many people left one.

The statewide list only includes spas with at least 20 Google reviews, which 233 of the 369 Idaho listings have.

No spa pays to be listed or to rank higher.

Med Spa Rules in Idaho

What Idaho law and its licensing boards say about who may do med spa treatments, each with its source. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

  1. Idaho Board of Medicine rules say cosmetic treatments that use prescriptive devices, such as lasers and IPL, or products, such as fillers and Botox, to penetrate or alter tissue are the practice of medicine. [1]
  2. Idaho's Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses tells licensed providers to check their own practice act before giving Botox or IV hydration or serving as a business's medical director. [2]
  3. Under Idaho Board of Medicine rules, medical personnel working under a supervising physician may give cosmetic treatments only with prescriptive devices and products that are non-incisive and non-ablative. [1]
  4. The supervising physician must be on site or immediately available while medical personnel give cosmetic treatments, and must review records periodically and hold regularly scheduled conferences with them. [1]
  5. An Idaho physician may supervise no more than three medical personnel doing cosmetic treatments at the same time, or up to six with prior Board approval. [1]
  6. The supervising physician must make sure patients are told about the training of the medical personnel treating them and that those personnel are not physicians. [1]
  7. Before medical personnel give your first cosmetic treatment, the supervising physician must document an evaluation, assessment and plan for you in your record. [1]
  8. Idaho's Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board says esthetics is limited to noninvasive skincare, and procedures that reach into living tissue or cause lasting structural changes are outside an esthetician's scope. [3]
  9. The same board says estheticians may use noninvasive Class I and Class II skincare devices, but Class II devices need supervision by an authorized practitioner, such as a physician or APRN, who is on site or readily available. [3]
  10. The cosmetology board says it has no jurisdiction over an esthetician doing non-esthetic work, such as medical assistant services, if they clearly state the service is not under their esthetics license and document informed consent. [3]
  11. Idaho Board of Medicine rules say the practice of medicine includes giving parenteral admixtures, such as IV preparations. [1]
  12. Idaho law lets advanced practice registered nurses, including certified nurse practitioners, prescribe, administer and dispense drugs as defined by Board rules. [4]
  13. The Idaho statute says these nurses collaborate with other health professionals but sets no physician supervision requirement. [4]
  14. You can check an Idaho physician, nurse or esthetician license with the state's Search for a License or Registration tool at edopl.idaho.gov. [5]
