Chin Filler Before and After: What the Trials Measured

Chin filler before and after shows up in clinical trials as a measured change on clinician-graded chin scales: in Restylane Defyne's chin trial, 86.1% of treated subjects showed at least a 1-point chin-profile improvement at week 12, versus 6.5% of untreated controls. As of October 2026, three US fillers are FDA-approved for the chin. Here is what the trials measured, what 1 ml and 2 ml mean on the labels, and where the published data stops.

Key takeaways

  • Three US fillers are FDA-approved for the chin: Juvéderm Voluma XC, Restylane Defyne and Restylane Lyft.
  • Other fillers used in chins, including Restylane Refyne, RHA, Radiesse and Volux, are off-label there.
  • Labels publish chin volume ceilings, not a typical 1 ml or 2 ml result.
  • Trial rates describe groups at study visits, not what any one person will see.
  • No trial in our research split chin results by face shape or by sex.

1 ml vs 2 ml of chin filler: what the labels actually cap

The searches ask what 1 ml looks like versus 2 ml, and the honest answer is that no chin-filler trial in our research published a before-and-after per milliliter.

What the labels publish are ceilings, and the Restylane Defyne label draws its line precisely: the maximum recommended injected volume per patient per chin treatment is 4 mL — 2 mL in the chin itself plus 2 mL below the lower lip, toward the pre-jowl sulcus.

The Restylane Lyft label caps the chin at the same 4 mL per treatment including touch-up, with no more than 2 mL at any single injection site, and in Lyft's chin trial the injected volume could not exceed 4.0 mL for initial and touch-up treatments combined.

We could not confirm a typical starting amount for the chin from any label or trial in our research, so a 1 ml before-and-after and a 2 ml one are not figures we can put on this page.

The amount of filler a chin gets comes out of a licensed provider's in-person assessment, and the label ceilings are safety limits, not targets.

The most concerning filler risk applies to the chin

FDA calls unintentional injection into a blood vessel the most concerning dermal filler risk: the chance is low, but a blocked vessel can cause tissue death (necrosis), vision abnormalities including blindness, or stroke. Symptoms like these after any filler injection need urgent attention — contact your treating provider or seek emergency care.

What changes in your profile after chin filler

The approved outcome is written around the profile.

FDA approved Juvéderm Voluma XC for chin augmentation to improve the chin profile on June 12, 2020, Restylane Defyne on January 29, 2021, and Restylane Lyft with Lidocaine on November 4, 2025 — the latter two for augmentation of the chin region to improve the chin profile in mild to moderate chin retrusion, all in patients over 21.

Every other filler injected into chins — including Restylane Refyne, the RHA collection, Radiesse and Juvéderm Volux — holds no chin indication as of October 2026, so chin use of those products is off-label: the use is on no current US label for them.

Restylane DefyneJanuary 29, 2021Mild to moderate chin retrusion
Restylane Lyft with LidocaineNovember 4, 2025Mild to moderate chin retrusion

Chin retrusion is the label term for a chin that sits back from the surrounding profile, and the Defyne and Lyft approvals describe the gel going in under the skin and/or on top of the chin bone — "subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal", in the regulatory language.

What the trials measured afterward is a graded change.

In Defyne's chin trial, 86.1% of treated subjects had at least a 1-point improvement in chin profile at week 12, versus 6.5% of untreated controls, and the difference over no treatment stayed statistically significant through week 48.

Lyft's chin trial, which tested Lyft against a comparator chin filler, used blinded evaluators — clinicians who did not know which treatment a subject received.

They graded at least a 1-grade chin improvement in 83.6% of subjects at month 3, 75.5% at month 6, 69.1% at month 9 and 69.7% at month 12.

A trial percentage describes the group studied at a study visit, not what any one person will see, and a practice's before-and-after photos document somebody else's result — never a preview of yours.

What the trials cannot tell you — cost, duration, who can legally inject — lives in our chin filler guide, and the chin's neighbor area has its own jawline filler guide.

Chin filler before and after on a round face

Straight answer first: none of the chin-filler trials in our research report before-and-after results separately for round faces, so we cannot show you what a round face looked like after treatment, and no percentage above transfers to a face shape the trials never split out.

What the approvals describe is position, not shape: Restylane Defyne and Restylane Lyft are approved for chin augmentation in mild to moderate chin retrusion — a chin that sits back — and placing a chin on that mild-to-moderate scale is part of a licensed provider's in-person exam.

The labels also record who was never studied.

Allergan's ISI states that Voluma XC safety was not studied in patients under 22 or over 80 for chin augmentation, and that Voluma XC was not studied in people with significant loose skin of the chin, neck or jaw — no safety data there, which is not the same as proof a treatment is unsafe.

Roundness and projection are also different dimensions: fullness under the chin is its own concern with its own double chin guide, and how a chin balances the rest of a face is an in-person judgment, not something a trial percentage settles.

Chin filler before and after for men

The chin approvals name an age, not a sex: all three products are approved in patients over 21, and the trial figures in our research are not split into male and female before-and-afters.

The same limit applies to the female version of this search.

So the honest before-and-after for men — and for women — is the group data in the sections above.

No male-specific or female-specific chin-filler figures turned up in our research, and a consultation is where goals for your own face get discussed and measured.

Frequently asked questions

How much does your chin change with 1 ml of filler?

We found no label or trial that ties a chin before-and-after to a 1 ml amount.

The Restylane Defyne label caps a chin treatment at 4 mL per patient — 2 mL in the chin plus 2 mL toward the pre-jowl sulcus — and the Restylane Lyft label caps the chin at 4 mL including touch-up, with no more than 2 mL per injection site.

Those are ceilings, not targets; the amount for your chin is an in-person decision.

Which fillers are FDA-approved for the chin?

Three, as of October 2026: Juvéderm Voluma XC (approved 2020), Restylane Defyne (2021) and Restylane Lyft with Lidocaine (2025).

Defyne and Lyft hold that approval for mild to moderate chin retrusion, and all three indications cover patients over 21.

Restylane Refyne, the RHA collection, Radiesse and Juvéderm Volux hold no chin indication, so chin injections with those products are off-label — the use is on no current US label for them.

How long did chin filler results last in the trials?

The trials tracked responders rather than a duration.

In Lyft's chin trial, 83.6% of subjects were graded as improved at month 3 and 69.7% at month 12; in Defyne's, the improvement over no treatment stayed statistically significant through week 48.

A responder rate counts how many subjects measured as improved at a study visit — it is not how long any one person's result lasts.
