Key takeaways
- Hyaluronidase dissolves only hyaluronic acid filler, and it also breaks down the lips' natural hyaluronic acid.
- Dissolving filler is an off-label use: the hyaluronidase labels list three FDA-approved uses, and this is not one of them.
- Cleveland Clinic says full results can take up to two weeks, and advises waiting at least 14 days before refilling lips.
- We found no published typical price for dissolving, so the quote has to come from the clinic.
Why people dissolve lip filler
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler — and only hyaluronic acid.
Cleveland Clinic describes it as working regardless of where the filler was placed, naming lips, cheeks and lower eyelids among the areas, while fillers made of other materials do not dissolve with it.
The lip fillers in our research that are FDA-approved for lip augmentation include Juvéderm Volbella XC (2016) and Restylane Kysse (2020).
Both are hyaluronic acid fillers with lidocaine — Allergan counts Volbella XC among its six hyaluronic acid Juvéderm fillers, all of which contain lidocaine, and the Kysse label describes a crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel with lidocaine — and hyaluronic acid is the one material this enzyme acts on.
People arrive at dissolving from a few different places: volume that feels like too much, filler that has drifted out of position, or lumps and nodules.
The best-documented example in our research is under the eyes: oculoplastic surgeons note hyaluronidase is generally effective at reducing overcorrection or migration of HA filler in that area.
That evidence is under the eyes, not the lips; we found no study tracking dissolving outcomes for migrated lip filler specifically.
If the problem is filler that has moved rather than simply too much of it, our lip filler migration guide covers the signs and what the sources say.
What happens during the appointment
In the US, the hyaluronidase drug products include Hylenex recombinant — a human recombinant hyaluronidase — and Amphadase, a purified bovine testicular hyaluronidase, both supplied as 150 USP units/mL single-dose vials.
One thing that varies from office to office is preparation: the authors of a 2024 survey of 264 practitioners note there are no official guidelines on hyaluronidase use in aesthetic practice, so storage, preparation and skin-testing practices vary.
US hyaluronidase products
| Product | Made from | Supplied as |
|---|---|---|
| Hylenex recombinant | Human recombinant hyaluronidase | 150 USP units/mL single-dose vial |
| Amphadase | Purified bovine testicular hyaluronidase | 150 USP units/mL single-dose vial |
- Allergy questions firstCleveland Clinic says providers ask before dissolving whether you are allergic to bee venom, and the labels' stated contraindication is hypersensitivity to hyaluronidase or another ingredient in the formulation. Skin testing is one of the practices the survey's authors say varies for lack of guidelines, and a 2021 UK guideline on hyaluronidase in aesthetic medicine discusses skin testing, allergy incidence and the wasp- and bee-sting link.
- The injectionsThe enzyme is injected into the lip area being treated. Cleveland Clinic puts the entire treatment at between 10 and 15 minutes.
- One or two visitsProviders can usually dissolve lip filler in one to two visits, Cleveland Clinic says; a large amount of filler or nodules may take more than one session.
The Hylenex and Amphadase labels list three FDA-approved uses: an adjuvant for subcutaneous fluid administration, increasing the dispersion and absorption of other injected drugs, and subcutaneous urography. Dissolving HA filler is not one of them — so it is an off-label use, including in vascular-occlusion emergencies.
Results day by day
Right after treatment you may notice some results immediately, but Cleveland Clinic says it can take up to two weeks to see the full results, because hyaluronic acid takes up to two weeks to break down completely.
Over the first week, minor bruising and swelling from the dissolving can last up to a week.
Cleveland Clinic lists allergic reactions, bruising, itching, pain, rash, discoloration and swelling among possible reactions.
The label record matches that picture.
Hylenex's label names mild local injection-site reactions such as redness and pain as its most frequently reported adverse reactions.
Allergic reactions (urticaria or angioedema) are reported in less than 0.1% of patients receiving hyaluronidase — a rate from general medical use, not filler dissolving specifically.
In the 2024 survey of 264 practitioners, 92% had never seen an acute reaction and just over 1% had ever observed anaphylaxis; 5% reported longer-term adverse effects, including 3 who reported loss of deep tissue.
The enzyme has been used in medicine since 1949, and a 2021 UK guideline on hyaluronidase in aesthetic medicine covers allergy, skin testing and a high-dose protocol for vascular occlusion.
Two expectations worth setting before you book.
First, the enzyme does not sort filler from tissue: hyaluronidase also breaks down the lips' natural hyaluronic acid, so lips may look thinner after the appointment than before it.
Second, removal is not a guaranteed reset — Allergan's Juvéderm information sheet states that the effectiveness of removing any dermal filler has not been studied, and FDA cautions that removing filler may be difficult or impossible, especially for "permanent" fillers or fillers not made of materials such as hyaluronic acid.
Cleveland Clinic says providers ask about bee-venom allergy beforehand and treats it as a reason not to proceed. The labels' contraindication is hypersensitivity to hyaluronidase or another formulation ingredient, and a 2024 expert panel was more willing to treat emergencies with hyaluronidase even with a bee- or wasp-sting history — the allergy question is a provider's risk decision, not an automatic no.

What dissolving lip filler costs
We could not confirm a price.
In the research behind this page, checked on 2026-10-20, no manufacturer, ASPS or review-site source we found published a typical price for filler dissolving — for the lips or any other area — so we will not print a national figure.
What the sources do give is the shape of the bill.
The treatment is short — 10 to 15 minutes — and one to two visits usually covers it, with a large amount of filler or nodules possibly taking more than one session.
A cost that can grow with a second visit is the honest expectation, so the quote has to come from the clinic itself.
Before booking, ask what the fee includes and whether a second visit costs extra.
Our filler dissolving guide covers the cost picture for all areas, including the filler-price figures our research did find.
When you can refill
Cleveland Clinic advises waiting at least 14 days after dissolving before lip filler is re-injected, because hyaluronic acid can take up to two weeks to fully break down.
The wait also buys a readable starting point: bruising and swelling from the dissolving can last up to a week, and the enzyme also breaks down the lips' natural hyaluronic acid along with the filler, so lips may look thinner afterwards.
First week
- Minor bruising and swelling from the dissolving can last up to a week
- Lips may look thinner, since the enzyme also breaks down natural hyaluronic acid
Up to two weeks
- Hyaluronic acid can take up to two weeks to fully break down
- Cleveland Clinic advises waiting at least 14 days before re-injecting lip filler
When you do refill, it is a fresh product decision.
Which fillers are FDA-approved for lips, how long they last and what they cost are questions our lip filler guide owns.
If you have read that lip filler can be dissolved and refilled in one appointment, that is not what the sources say. Cleveland Clinic advises waiting at least 14 days between dissolving and re-injecting, and full results take up to two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does lip filler dissolve on its own?
It fades, but fading is not the same as gone.
The makers of the lip fillers in our research describe results lasting up to 1 year — Volbella XC, Ultra XC and RHA 3 are the products named — and FDA notes filler hyaluronic acid is often chemically crosslinked to last longer in the body.
In one MRI study, mid-face HA filler was still detectable in all 33 patients at least 2 years after injection.
Hyaluronidase is how a provider can dissolve filler sooner.
Can lip filler be dissolved in one visit?
Cleveland Clinic says providers can usually dissolve lip filler in one to two visits, with a large amount of filler or nodules possibly taking more than one session.
The treatment itself is short — the clinic puts it at between 10 and 15 minutes — and the full result still takes up to two weeks to show.
Is dissolving lip filler FDA-approved?
No. The hyaluronidase products used in the US — Hylenex and Amphadase among them — list three FDA-approved uses: aiding subcutaneous fluid administration, increasing the dispersion and absorption of other injected drugs, and subcutaneous urography.
Dissolving filler is not one of them, so the use is off-label, including in vascular-occlusion emergencies.
Will dissolving lip filler hurt?
Pain is on the reaction lists.
Hylenex's label names pain and redness as its most frequently reported adverse reactions, and Cleveland Clinic lists allergic reactions, bruising, itching, pain, rash, discoloration and swelling among possible reactions to dissolving.
Minor bruising and swelling can last up to a week.
How a given treatment feels is a question for your provider.
