Key takeaways
- Our October 2026 research found no sourced national average price for IPL photofacials, so this page prints none.
- Session count is the multiplier: the main study ran up to five full-face treatments at 4-week intervals.
- Cleared uses are device-specific, and "photofacial" is a marketing name, not a cleared indication.
- No primary source we found documents results beyond the 4- and 6-month study follow-ups.
- Deferred-interest financing can charge up to 32.99% APR if the promotional balance is not paid in full in time.
What is the average cost of an IPL photofacial?
We found no confirmed national average price for an IPL photofacial in the sources we checked, and this page will not invent one.
Our research, completed in October 2026, could not find a tier-1 or tier-2 national average for IPL photofacials: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has no IPL cost page, and RealSelf, which our researchers tried for its cost pages, blocked access.
So if a website prints a national IPL photofacial average, the fair question is what source it is citing — the checkable sources we found do not include one.
The treatment's naming makes averages slippery in a second way.
IPL is not a laser: ASPS defines intense pulsed light as a non-laser light treatment that emits multiple wavelengths, whose energy is absorbed by target cells and converted to heat, targeting pigment, blood vessels and hair follicles. "Photofacial" is a marketing name rather than a cleared indication, IPL devices are FDA-cleared rather than approved, and each device is cleared for its own list of uses.
Two practices advertising the same "photofacial" may be running different machines with different cleared uses — our IPL photofacial guide covers that side in depth.
What we can describe is what a quote is built from.
Payment can be structured different ways — single sessions, packages, or pricing by area — and our research did not establish one standard structure for IPL, so the structure itself is one of the things to ask about.
The next section breaks down the variables that move the total.
This is not a page that skipped its research. A national average needs a published source, and the tier-1 and tier-2 sources we checked in October 2026 do not have one for IPL photofacials. Local quotes are the prices that actually apply to you.
What drives the price: area, sessions, device, provider, city
Our research found no published source pricing IPL photofacials variable by variable, so treat this section as the list of things a quote is actually made of — the questions that let you put two quotes side by side and see what differs.
Area. The main photorejuvenation study treated the full face, with up to five treatments at 4-week intervals.
Whether a quote covers the full face or a smaller area changes what a session involves, so the area belongs on every quote in writing.
Sessions. Session count is the multiplier in any quote: both studies cited here ran series, not single visits — the 93-patient photorejuvenation study ran up to five full-face treatments spaced 4 weeks apart, and a smaller 2019 study of 30 patients used three sessions of same-day IPL plus a non-ablative fractional laser, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Those are study protocols rather than a requirement — the count for you is your provider's call — but whatever count a practice recommends, the total moves with it.
Device. Cleared uses are device-specific, and the device is checkable.
One example: Lumenis's Stellar M22 IPL handpiece, cleared in 2020 under K193500, uses a 400–1200 nanometer spectrum with interchangeable filters and is cleared for benign pigmented lesions, benign vascular lesions, cutaneous lesions including scars and striae, and hair reduction.
A practice running a different IPL device is offering a different product with its own clearance — one more reason two photofacial prices are not automatically the same treatment.
Provider and city. Here our research found nothing to quantify: we could not locate a sourced figure for how much the operator's credentials or the city move IPL prices.
If those factors do move prices, the difference will show up where prices are real — in local quotes — which is why the end of this page is about comparing quotes rather than averages.
What each price driver looks like in the evidence
| Driver | What the research shows |
|---|---|
| Area | Main study treated the full face |
| Sessions | Up to five treatments 4 weeks apart; a 2019 study used three sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart |
| Device | Cleared uses are device-specific (e.g. Stellar M22, K193500, 400–1200 nm) |
| Provider and city | No sourced figure found |
How much is a full series vs one session?
The honest version: our research found no published source giving a series-versus-single-session price for IPL photofacials, so we cannot print a dollar gap.
What the research does establish is the shape of a series, and the shape is what turns a per-session price into a course total.
In the multicenter photorejuvenation study, 93 patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I to III received up to five full-face treatments at 4-week intervals, and wrinkle and elastosis scores improved in 82% of patients at the 4-month follow-up and 75% at 6 months after the last treatment.
It is one older study, in lighter skin types only, and those are study-level shares, not a prediction for any one person.
A smaller 2019 study of 30 patients used three sessions of same-day IPL plus a non-ablative fractional laser, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
The two study series cited here
| Study | Patients | Skin types | Sessions | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multicenter photorejuvenation study | 93 | Fitzpatrick I–III | Up to five, full face | 4 weeks |
| 2019 prospective study | 30 | Fitzpatrick II–IV | Three, IPL plus non-ablative fractional laser | 4 to 6 weeks |
The practical math follows from whatever pricing a practice uses.
If the quote is per session, the series total is that price times the number of sessions recommended, so the count and the interval belong in the quote.
Ask what a series costs versus single sessions, and what happens to the price if you stop after one or two.
One caution before multiplying: the follow-ups in the main study ran 4 and 6 months after the last treatment, and our research found no primary source for IPL photofacial longevity beyond them.
A series buys sessions under a plan; the published evidence we could locate does not document a results horizon in years.
Our research found no primary source establishing how long IPL photofacial results last beyond study follow-up of 4 to 6 months. If a multi-session package is sold on results lasting years, ask what that claim is based on.

Are packages, memberships or financing worth it?
Whether a package or membership pays off is arithmetic, and our research found no sourced per-session price, package price or membership credit for the treatment to run it with.
So the worth-it question resolves at the practice, with three checks.
Does the package price beat the per-session price times the sessions you would actually buy?
What does it include beyond the sessions?
And what happens to unused sessions or your money if you stop?
As for memberships, what matters is whether the credits and discounts match what you would spend anyway.
Our guide to how med spa deals and memberships work covers the fine print that decides that.
Financing is where a published number finally appears — on the lender's side, not the treatment's.
CareCredit says it is accepted at 285,000+ locations, with promotional financing on purchases of $200 or more within its network (read October 16, 2026).
LaserAway's pricing page, read the same day, used a deferred-interest plan as its financing example: no interest if the promotional balance is paid in full within the promotional period, otherwise interest of up to 32.99% APR is charged.
Our financing options guide compares medical credit cards, installment loans and buy-now-pay-later plans — APRs, credit checks and the deferred-interest structure — with each figure dated.
In a deferred-interest plan like LaserAway's financing example, no interest is charged if the promotional balance is paid in full within the promotional period — otherwise interest of up to 32.99% APR is charged. Read the program's own terms, including what happens if the balance is not paid off in the promotional window, before putting a series of sessions on it.
Why are some IPL photofacial prices so low?
We cannot draw a "too cheap" line for IPL photofacials, for the same reason this page has no average: we found no sourced national or typical price to be low against. "Low" only means something next to other local quotes for the same scope — the same device, the same area, the same session count.
What can a low quote actually reflect?
The published evidence supports possibilities to check, not conclusions.
It may be a per-session intro price leading into a multi-session course — both studies cited above ran series, not single visits.
It may cover a different device with a different clearance than the one you read about, since cleared uses are device-specific.
It may cover a smaller area or fewer inclusions.
None of these is a problem by itself; each is a question the practice should answer specifically.
The promise is the part to discount.
Our research found no primary source for how long IPL photofacial results last beyond study follow-up of 4 to 6 months, so a price sold on results lasting years — or on an outcome a practice commits to in advance — is promising something the published evidence we could locate does not document.
The walk-out signs — no consultation, no named medical director, pressure to buy — are on the list our med spa red flags guide covers.
A cheap quote does not prove substandard treatment, and an expensive one does not prove better treatment. The checkable things are the device and its cleared uses, who operates it and how your eyes will be protected, and exactly what the quote includes.
Where can you compare IPL photofacial prices near you?
Because no national figure checked out in our research, the comparison that means anything is local: itemized quotes from the practices near you, for the same scope of treatment.
The number that applies to you is a practice's own quote, and a quote that names its variables can be compared against another one; a quote that does not cannot.
Bring the same list of questions to each practice, and the differences between quotes become readable instead of just big or small.
- Which IPL device would you use, and what is that device cleared for?
- Is the quote per session or a package, and exactly which area does it cover?
- How many sessions do you expect for my skin and concern, and at what interval?
- What is the total cost of the full course you are recommending?
- What is included beyond the sessions — consultation, eye protection, post-treatment care?
- What happens to the price if I stop after one or two sessions?
- What are the payment options, and what would they cost in total?
Take the answers, not the headline price, into the decision.
A licensed provider who has examined your skin is the one who can turn these questions into a plan — and into a number that actually applies to you.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an IPL photofacial cost?
We could not find a tier-1 or tier-2 national average price for IPL photofacials in research completed October 2026: ASPS has no IPL cost page, and RealSelf blocked access when our researchers tried it.
Rather than print a number we cannot source, we explain what quotes are built from.
Ask practices for an itemized quote — per session or package, which area, how many sessions, the total course cost — and compare the answers side by side.
How many sessions are in an IPL photofacial series?
The main photorejuvenation study gave 93 patients up to five full-face treatments at 4-week intervals.
A smaller 2019 study of 30 patients used three sessions of same-day IPL plus a non-ablative fractional laser, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Both are study protocols, not requirements.
The count for you is a licensed provider's decision after examining your skin, and it is the number that turns a per-session price into a course total.
Do IPL photofacial packages save money?
There is no sourced answer: our research found no IPL-specific package or per-session prices to compare.
A package is worth checking when its price is lower than the per-session price times the sessions you would actually buy.
Ask what the package includes, how long sessions stay valid, and what happens to unused sessions.
Note the evidence gap too: no primary source we found shows results lasting beyond the 4- and 6-month study follow-ups.
Does insurance cover an IPL photofacial?
We found no source establishing insurance coverage for IPL photofacials in either direction, so we cannot tell you what a plan would cover.
If coverage matters to you, ask the practice and your insurer before booking.
Financing is a separate question from insurance, and our financing guide compares the programs' published terms, figure by figure.
Is an IPL photofacial worth the money?
That depends on your concern, your skin and the alternatives, and it is a decision for you and a licensed provider — a price guide cannot make it.
What the evidence shows is narrower: in the main study, wrinkle and elastosis scores improved in 82% of patients at 4 months and 75% at 6 months after a series of up to five treatments.
What we could not find is evidence on how long results last beyond those follow-ups.
