Key takeaways
- Masseter Botox is priced per unit or per area, so a quote is roughly the planned units times the per-unit price.
- No national average price can be confirmed: the ASPS 2025 report omits fees for minimally invasive procedures.
- Jaw slimming is off-label, so no label sets the dose; the published studies are the only reference for unit counts.
- Units are product-specific, so a Botox per-unit price can't be compared with a Dysport per-unit price.
- The AAD says insurance does not cover botulinum toxin for signs of aging.
How much does masseter Botox cost?
There is no national average price for masseter Botox that we can confirm.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2025 statistics report omits fees for minimally invasive procedures, and its older reports and the consumer cost pages we would normally check were not retrievable when we researched this page.
What can be stated precisely is how the pricing works.
Med spas typically price botulinum toxin per unit or per treatment area, and the price of an area is roughly its unit count times the per-unit price.
A masseter quote therefore rests on two numbers: how many units the injector plans to use, and what the practice charges per unit.
The unit count has no label to anchor it.
No US neurotoxin label lists the masseter, and the current Botox Cosmetic label — the DailyMed version published January 8, 2026 — does not list masseter prominence as an approved indication, although AbbVie has run phase 2 and phase 3 trials of onabotulinumtoxinA for masseter muscle prominence.
There is no labeled jaw dose the way 20 units is the Botox Cosmetic label dose for frown lines.
What exists in the public record instead is trial dosing.
AbbVie's phase 3 jaw-slimming trial, run in 376 adults with marked or very marked masseter prominence, treated participants with 72 units of onabotulinumtoxinA against a placebo.
Its 12-month phase 2 study tested 24 to 96 units in 187 adults.
A 2026 meta-analysis of 5 randomized placebo-controlled trials, pooling 536 participants, found benefit at 48-unit and 72-unit regimens while concluding that the evidence is insufficient to define an optimal dose or protocol.
Masseter doses in the published research
| Study | Participants | Dose |
|---|---|---|
| AbbVie phase 3 trial | 376 adults | 72 units onabotulinumtoxinA vs placebo |
| AbbVie phase 2 study (12 months) | 187 adults | 24 to 96 units onabotulinumtoxinA |
| 2026 meta-analysis (5 randomized trials) | 536 participants | Benefit at 48-unit and 72-unit regimens; no optimal dose defined |
Because no label sets the dose and no national figure anchors the fee, two honest quotes can legitimately differ.
Comparing them means getting the same two numbers from every practice you consult.
Insurance is a separate question.
The American Academy of Dermatology says insurance does not cover botulinum toxin for signs of aging, while treatment of excessive sweating may be at least partly covered depending on the plan.
Jaw slimming appears on no current US label, and we found no source on coverage for it specifically, so treat coverage as a question for the practice and your insurance plan.
What affects the cost of masseter Botox?
The planned dose. The published dose range is wide, and the optimal dose is genuinely open: the 2026 meta-analysis concluded the current evidence is insufficient to define an optimal dose or protocol, even though its 48-unit and 72-unit regimens showed benefit.
Since a session scales with units, a jaw treatment planned at the phase 3 trial's 72 units costs more, at the same per-unit price, than one planned lower.
The phase 2 study tested 24 to 96 units, and at its top dose — 96 units — a localized impact on the smile was reported in 4 subjects, while no clinically relevant changes in the jawbone or teeth were seen across the study.
More units mean more cost — and at the top of the studied range, a reported smile effect.
The product. Toxin units are product-specific: the Botox Cosmetic label states that its units cannot be compared to or converted into units of any other botulinum toxin product, and the Dysport label says the same of its own.
A per-unit price for one brand is therefore not comparable with a per-unit price for another — the units are not the same unit.
Cross-brand dose figures show why.
In a Korean clinic series, 121 patients with masseter hypertrophy were treated repeatedly with 100 to 140 units of Dysport per side.
Those are Dysport units, from one clinic's retrospective review — neither the units nor the setting transfer into a Botox quote.
Repeat treatment. No label gives a masseter duration or re-treatment interval, because no label covers the use.
In the phase 3 trial, improvements were sustained through day 180 — the last point its published results report, not a promise of when the effect stops.
In the Korean series, the mean dose needed decreased as treatments continued, so later sessions may need less product.
Both figures are trial and single-clinic observations, not a schedule; ask any practice you consult how they time repeat sessions and what they would charge across a year.
Everything else is local. With no national figure to benchmark a quote against, the practice's own price — per unit or per area — and the dose it plans are the numbers that describe what you would actually pay.
What to ask your injector about the price
A masseter quote is only comparable once you can take it apart.
These five questions turn a price into numbers you can line up against another practice's.
- Which product, and how many units in total? Units are product-specific and no label sets a jaw dose. For scale, the phase 3 trial used 72 units of onabotulinumtoxinA and the phase 2 study tested 24 to 96 units.
- What is your per-unit price, and what would my total be at that dose? Pricing runs per unit or per treatment area. If the quote is per area, ask how many units it includes, so it can be compared with per-unit pricing.
- Why that dose for my muscles? With no optimal dose defined by the evidence, the reasoning behind the number is part of what you are paying for.
- What does the top of the dose range change? In the phase 2 study, a localized impact on the smile was reported in 4 subjects at the 96-unit dose, and no clinically relevant changes in the jawbone or teeth were seen across the study's doses.
- What would a year of treatment cost? The phase 3 trial measured improvements through day 180 and no label states a masseter duration, so the practice's own re-treatment plan sets your annual number.
None of these questions is out of place at a consultation.
A practice that answers them with numbers is handing you a quote you can actually compare.

Who holds the syringe is a bigger part of the price question than it looks.
The CDC advises getting botulinum toxin injections only from a licensed, trained provider using product from an authorized source, and cautions that the procedure carries risk even when the product is FDA-approved and injected correctly.
That caution has recent, concrete grounds.
On April 16, 2024, the FDA warned that counterfeit Botox had been given to consumers for cosmetic purposes in multiple states, with adverse events including hospitalizations.
The agency said the incidents occurred when product was injected by licensed and unlicensed individuals and/or in non-medical or unlicensed settings, with product apparently bought from unlicensed sources; federal law requires providers to buy prescription drugs only from authorized sources.
The CDC's closed 2023-2024 investigation counted 17 people in nine states with harmful reactions after injections with counterfeit or unverified botulinum toxin products, or from people not following state requirements; 13 were hospitalized and 6 received botulism antitoxin.
One check sits on the product itself.
The Botox Cosmetic label says genuine product shows U.S. License number 1889 on the vial and carton, and instructs that it not be used, and that AbbVie be contacted, if the number is missing or the tamper-evident features look broken.
When you compare practices, put the pricing questions from the last section next to these source questions.
Our how to choose a med spa guide walks the whole checklist, from credentials to red flags, and the masseter Botox guide covers the treatment itself: what the trials measured and how results unfold.
Botox Cosmetic carries an FDA boxed warning for distant spread of toxin effect: the effects of all botulinum toxin products may spread from the injection area and cause symptoms such as generalized weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, and swallowing or breathing difficulty, reported hours to weeks after injection. Per the label, swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening and there have been reports of death.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no national average price for masseter Botox?
Two gaps stack up.
On the price side, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2025 statistics report omits fees for minimally invasive procedures, and we could not retrieve its older reports or the cost pages we would normally check.
On the dose side, no label sets a jaw dose and a 2026 meta-analysis concluded the evidence is insufficient to define an optimal one.
With the units and the fees both unfixed, no single confirmed national figure can describe a jaw treatment.
Is masseter Botox covered by insurance?
The American Academy of Dermatology says insurance does not cover botulinum toxin for signs of aging, and jaw slimming appears on no current US label.
We found no source on coverage for masseter injections specifically, so treat coverage as a question to put to the practice and your insurance plan before you book.
Are Botox and Dysport jaw doses the same?
They cannot be compared, and they cannot be converted.
The Botox Cosmetic label states that its units cannot be compared to or converted into units of any other botulinum toxin product, and Dysport's label says the same.
In the studies, AbbVie's phase 3 trial used 72 units of onabotulinumtoxinA, while a Korean clinic series used 100 to 140 units of Dysport per side.
Those numbers describe different products, not larger and smaller doses.
Does paying for more units make masseter Botox last longer?
The jaw studies do not establish that.
No label states a masseter duration, and the 2026 meta-analysis concluded the evidence is insufficient to define an optimal dose.
What the trials measured is narrower: in the phase 3 trial, improvements from a 72-unit dose were sustained through day 180, and the phase 2 study tested 24 to 96 units.
Whether more units buys a longer result for you is a question for the provider who examines your muscles.
