What is a Sculptra BBL?
Sculptra is the brand name for injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA): a powder supplied in 367.5 mg single-patient, single-session vials that must be mixed with sterile water before injection.
In the US, Sculptra is approved for three facial uses: HIV-associated facial fat loss (2004), shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in immune-competent people (2009, as Sculptra Aesthetic), and fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region (2023).
Sculptra's US approvals
| Year | Approved use |
|---|---|
| 2004 | HIV-associated facial fat loss |
| 2009 | Shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles (as Sculptra Aesthetic) |
| 2023 | Fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region |
| None | Buttocks or hips |
A "Sculptra BBL" — also called a Sculptra butt lift, a Sculptra buttock lift or a non-surgical BBL — is a different use: Sculptra butt injections placed into the buttocks or hips to build volume gradually.
That use is off-label.
In the FDA's own device approval database as of October 12, 2026, no US dermal filler has an approved indication for the buttocks or hips, and Sculptra's label states that safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated when it is injected in larger amounts, at different frequencies, or at sites other than its approved uses.
For the approved facial uses — how they work, what they cost and how long results last — see our Sculptra guide.
The FDA recommends against using any dermal filler for body contouring, including increasing the size of the buttocks, and states these uses are not FDA-approved. The published record on filler buttock augmentation also carries warnings that serious complications may occur.
How many vials does a Sculptra butt lift use?
Each vial is 367.5 mg of PLLA powder, and there is no official vial count for the buttocks: the label's injection limits cover facial areas, and the label states that larger amounts and other sites have not been evaluated.
The numbers come from a single retrospective series of 60 women who had Sculptra buttock injections: 1 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, using 2 to 12 vials per session — counts the authors said were set "based on the patient budget." Their conclusion was that visible results required at least 20 vials in total.
Read that as one study, not a dosing standard: it reviewed one practice's own patients, uncontrolled, using a product off-label.
For scale, in Sculptra's approved cheek-wrinkle trial, subjects received at most two vials per session, one per side.
How much does a Sculptra butt lift cost?
Providers price Sculptra per vial, so the cost of a Sculptra buttock lift is mostly a function of vial count: a plan of 20 or more vials across multiple sessions is a different order of spending from the at most two vials per session given in Sculptra's cheek-wrinkle trial.
The broadest national figure is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons': an average cost of $901 for non-hyaluronic-acid fillers, the category that includes Sculptra, Radiesse and Bellafill.
That is the average fee reported by ASPS member plastic surgeons — not a med spa price and not a buttock-specific price — and the page does not state the data year.
ASPS says filler prices vary with the injector's expertise and qualifications, the type of procedure, the time and effort required and the office's location, and that health insurance does not cover dermal fillers.
One offset to ask about: Galderma's ASPIRE rewards program covers Sculptra, with a $20-off welcome reward and 100 points equal to $10 in savings, up to 600 points per visit, per Galderma's site.
For per-vial pricing in detail, see how much Sculptra costs.

Sculptra butt lift results and timeline
In the 60-woman series, the authors reported visible volume amplification, improved skin texture and softened cellulite dimpling when at least 20 vials were used.
A course of one to three sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is a weeks-to-months project, not one appointment.
Sculptra is not an instant filler.
The FDA's material-level description of PLLA notes that results appear gradually over several weeks.
Galderma says Sculptra results can be seen as early as 1 month after treatment and last up to 2 years — a manufacturer claim about Sculptra generally, and no study we found reports how long buttock results last.
Before-and-after galleries for a "Sculptra BBL" show one patient's outcome.
The FTC treats such photos as implying typical results, so read them as examples rather than a preview of your own — study results are group averages, not what any one person gets.
The dimpling point is worth separating: cellulite is its own condition with its own treatment evidence, covered in our cellulite treatment guide.
For facial results vial by vial, see Sculptra before and after.
Sculptra BBL safety vs a surgical BBL
The evidence on filler buttock augmentation is thin and mostly low quality.
A 2020 review in Dermatologic Surgery called the gluteal-filler literature sparse, and a 2023 systematic review found only 12 reports, most judged strongly biased; its authors concluded that gluteal augmentation with soft tissue fillers is "not as simple and innocuous as advertised" and that serious complications may occur.
Against surgery, this page makes no comparison: we did not find sourced surgical-BBL outcome figures in our research, so we cannot rank the two procedures' risks.
Discuss both options with a licensed provider.
One warning sits outside Sculptra altogether: the FDA has not approved liquid silicone or silicone gel injection to fill wrinkles or augment tissue anywhere in the body, no filler is approved for over-the-counter sale, and the agency says people should not inject themselves or buy filler online.
Sculptra cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase the way hyaluronic acid fillers can — it has no reversing agent. In Sculptra's five-year US post-approval study (867 subjects, facial use), delayed nodules or papules occurred in 28.5% of subjects. The 2020 review also cautions that injections placed too deep can endanger the gluteal vessels and the sciatic nerve.
How to find a provider for a Sculptra butt lift
The FDA advises choosing a licensed health care provider with dermatology or plastic-surgery experience who is trained in filler injection, and describes filler injection as a medical procedure rather than a cosmetic treatment.
Who may legally inject is set state by state.
AmSpa, the med spa trade association, says injecting botulinum toxin is the practice of medicine, to be done by a physician, an independent-practice nurse practitioner or another licensed professional acting within their scope, under rules that vary by state.
That statement is about toxin: we did not find a national source on who may inject Sculptra, so check your own state's rules.
Because the buttock use is off-label, it is fair to ask extra questions before booking: what training the provider has with this specific use, how many vials they are planning over how many sessions and why, and how they would handle a complication.
The FDA expects injectors to know the warning signs of intravascular injection and to have an updated plan for treating it, on site or by immediate referral.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Sculptra butt lift FDA-approved?
No. The FDA recommends against using any dermal filler for body contouring, including increasing the size of the buttocks, and states these uses are not FDA-approved.
In the FDA's device approval database as of October 12, 2026, no US filler has an approved indication for the buttocks or hips, and Sculptra's label says safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated at sites outside its approved facial uses.
How many vials does a Sculptra BBL require?
There is no official number, because the buttocks are off-label and the label sets injection limits only for facial areas.
In one retrospective series of 60 women, patients received 2 to 12 vials per session across 1 to 3 sessions, and the authors concluded visible results required at least 20 vials in total.
That is one study of one practice's patients, not a dosing standard.
How long does a Sculptra butt lift last?
No study we found reports how long buttock results last.
For Sculptra generally, Galderma says results can be seen as early as 1 month after treatment and last up to 2 years, and the FDA's material-level estimate for PLLA fillers is up to 2 years, with results appearing gradually over several weeks.
Neither figure is buttock-specific: they describe Sculptra and PLLA fillers generally.
Is a Sculptra BBL safer than a surgical BBL?
This page does not rank the two: we did not find sourced surgical-BBL outcome figures in our research.
What the record shows for filler buttock augmentation is a weak evidence base — a 2023 systematic review found only 12 reports, most strongly biased, and warned that serious complications may occur.
Discuss both options with a licensed provider.
