How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

How long does lip filler last? Figures published for the lip fillers themselves — maker claims and the Restylane Kysse trial — sit at or under one year. FDA estimates hyaluronic acid fillers last approximately 6 to 12 months. Allergan says Volbella XC and Ultra XC, its two Juvéderm lip fillers, last up to 1 year with optimal treatment. In the Kysse trial, 60% of subjects were still lip-fullness responders at week 48.

Key takeaways

  • Makers' own lip claims top out at up to 1 year: Juvéderm Volbella XC, Ultra XC and RHA fillers.
  • Longer figures, like Voluma XC's up to 2 years, belong to other areas, not the lips.
  • No permanent filler is approved for the lips; the HA lip fillers are absorbable.
  • HA filler can stay in tissue after the visible effect fades.
  • Hyaluronidase dissolves only HA filler, and using it this way is off-label.

How long does lip filler last on average?

FDA groups fillers by material and publishes a general duration estimate for each one.

For hyaluronic acid — the material in the Juvéderm collection and in Restylane Kysse — that estimate is approximately 6 to 12 months.

It is a material-level estimate for hyaluronic acid fillers in general, not a lip-only number.

The figures published for the lip products themselves sit at or under one year.

Allergan says results with Juvéderm Volbella XC and Juvéderm Ultra XC in the lips can last up to 1 year "with optimal treatment" — a maker's stated maximum, not an average.

Teoxane and Revance, the companies behind the RHA collection, say RHA fillers last up to a year in the lips, and up to 15 months in dynamic wrinkles and folds, which is not a lip area.

The most detailed public lip data we found is a trial, not a marketing page.

In the Restylane Kysse pivotal trial, a blinded evaluator rated 60% of treated subjects (101 of 169) as still lip-fullness responders at week 48 — meaning at least a 1-point improvement on the Medicis Lip Fullness Scale, just short of the one-year mark.

In plain terms: at that week-48 visit, a majority of the studied subjects still showed measurable correction, and the rest did not.

Where "12 to 18 months" comes from

Cleveland Clinic's lip filler page puts the duration at 12 to 18 months, depending on age and metabolism. That is longer than the makers' own lip claims (up to 1 year) and longer than the Kysse trial shows at week 48, so this page reports it as one expert source's estimate rather than a settled figure.

How long does each lip filler brand last?

Duration figures are published per product and per area, so what matters here is the specific filler.

Here is what is published for the lip products, and who published it.

  • Juvéderm Volbella XC and Ultra XC (Allergan): up to 1 year in the lips with optimal treatment — a maker claim.
  • Restylane Kysse (Galderma): 60% of trial subjects still lip-fullness responders at week 48 (101 of 169) — trial data, not a maker maximum.
  • RHA fillers (Teoxane/Revance): up to a year in the lips and lipstick lines, and up to 15 months in dynamic wrinkles and folds — a maker claim.

Two cautions when reading these numbers.

First, "up to" figures are maximums under a maker's own phrase "optimal treatment", and a trial percentage describes the group studied, not the result any one person will get.

Second, longer numbers you may have seen belong to other areas: Allergan says Voluma XC lasts up to 2 years in the cheeks and Vollure XC up to 18 months in the smile lines, and neither product — nor Ultra Plus XC or RHA 2 — is approved for the lips at all.

Other products are approved for the lips — Restylane Silk (2014) and Revanesse Lips+ (2020) among them — but we found no duration figure for them in the labels and trials we checked, so they are not in the list above.

RHA 3 is the only RHA product with a lip indication, approved on 2023-10-27 for the vermilion body, vermilion border and oral commissures in adults 22 or older.

Does lip filler ever fully go away?

The fading is the design.

FDA groups filler materials into absorbable (temporary) ones — hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic acid — and one non-absorbable (permanent) material, PMMA microspheres in bovine collagen.

FDA says it has approved only one product made from a material the body does not absorb.

That product is Bellafill, originally sold as ArteFill and renamed SANAE in 2026 with FDA's approval: PMMA microspheres in bovine collagen, approved in 2006 for nasolabial folds (smile lines) and in 2014 for certain atrophic cheek acne scars.

Its approved indications do not include the lips, so no permanent filler is approved for the lips.

The lip fillers with published material details in this guide — the Juvéderm gels and Restylane Kysse — are hyaluronic acid, one of FDA's absorbable materials.

How the fade works, in the Kysse label's own words: biodegradation varies by individual and treatment area, and "product remnants may remain in the tissue even when the clinical effect has returned to baseline." In other words, the look can fade before the filler is entirely gone.

One small study underlines the point.

An MRI study of 33 patients found mid-face hyaluronic acid filler still detectable in all of them at least 2 years after injection, with some filler visible 8 to 15 years later.

That study looked at the mid-face, not the lips, and 33 people is a small group — but it shows HA filler can linger in tissue long after results fade.

If waiting is not appealing, hyaluronidase injections can dissolve hyaluronic acid filler — and only HA filler.

Cleveland Clinic says dissolving usually takes one to two visits, with full results in up to two weeks, and that providers ask about a bee-sting allergy before using it.

FDA cautions that removing filler can require injections, surgery or other interventions with their own risks, and may be difficult or impossible — especially for permanent fillers or fillers not made of hyaluronic acid.

Allergan's own information sheet states that the effectiveness of removal of any dermal filler has not been studied.

Our filler dissolving guide covers the process in detail.

Dissolving filler is an off-label use

Hyaluronidase products such as Hylenex are FDA-approved only to help the body absorb injected fluids and other injected drugs, and in subcutaneous urography. Using hyaluronidase to dissolve filler is not on that label — it is an off-label use.

What makes lip filler wear off faster?

The honest answer starts with the label's own words: biodegradation varies by individual and by treatment area.

Cleveland Clinic points to age and metabolism as reasons lip filler duration varies.

Neither the label's biodegradation line nor the clinic page puts a number on how much any one factor matters, and we could not find a study that measures it.

Product choice matters too.

FDA describes hyaluronic acid as a sugar naturally present in skin and cartilage, and says filler HA is often chemically crosslinked to last longer.

Each duration figure is tied to its own product and area — a maker's figure for one product and one area is not another product's.

You may have seen claims that specific habits — exercise, sun exposure, even kissing — melt lip filler faster.

We found no controlled trial measuring any of them.

The aftercare rules in Juvéderm's labeling (no makeup for 12 hours, and minimizing strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol for the first 24 hours) exist because those things may cause temporary redness, swelling and itching — the label ties them to side effects, not to how long results last.

When should you get a lip filler touch-up?

No label or trial we found sets a refill schedule for the lips, so when to book is a decision to make with a licensed provider based on how your lips look and feel to you.

What the record does show is that top-ups were part of how these products were studied: in the Restylane Kysse trial, the median volume for initial treatment plus touch-up was 2.50 mL across all areas — a median of 0.90 mL in the upper lip and 0.80 mL in the lower lip — and subjects who were retreated received a median of 1.30 mL.

Volume still has a ceiling.

The Kysse label sets a recommended maximum of 6 mL per patient per treatment, with no more than 3 mL of that in the lips.

Cleveland Clinic says about 1 mL of filler goes into the lips on average, and points to a follow-up visit about two weeks after treatment to review the final result.

If your filler fades faster than you expected, a touch-up is not the only option — dissolving and starting again with a different product is a conversation to have with the same licensed provider.

Booking around an event

Cleveland Clinic advises booking lip filler at least two weeks before a big event. Its timeline: swelling usually goes away after 24 to 48 hours, but may take up to a week.

Frequently asked questions

Does lip filler go away on its own?

Yes.

The Juvéderm and Restylane Kysse lip fillers are hyaluronic acid gels, and FDA classifies hyaluronic acid among its absorbable (temporary) filler materials, with a general duration estimate of 6 to 12 months.

Allergan says its Juvéderm lip fillers last up to 1 year with optimal treatment.

The Kysse label says biodegradation varies by individual and treatment area, and notes product remnants may remain in tissue even after the visible effect has returned to baseline.

Is lip filler permanent?

No permanent filler is approved for the lips.

FDA has approved only one US filler made from a material the body does not absorb — Bellafill, PMMA microspheres in bovine collagen, renamed SANAE in 2026 with FDA's approval — and its indications are nasolabial folds and certain cheek acne scars, not lips.

The lip fillers with published material details in this guide are hyaluronic acid gels, which FDA counts as absorbable (temporary) and estimates at approximately 6 to 12 months.

How long does Juvéderm lip filler last?

Allergan says results with Juvéderm Volbella XC and Juvéderm Ultra XC in the lips can last up to 1 year with optimal treatment.

Other Juvéderm products — Ultra Plus XC, Vollure XC and Voluma XC — are not approved for the lips, so their figures for other areas do not apply here: Allergan puts Voluma XC at up to 2 years in the cheeks and Vollure XC at up to 18 months in the smile lines.

How long does Restylane Kysse last?

The most detailed public figure we found for any lip filler comes from Kysse's own pivotal trial.

A blinded evaluator found 60% of treated subjects (101 of 169) still met the lip-fullness responder threshold at week 48 — at least a 1-point improvement on the Medicis Lip Fullness Scale, just short of the one-year mark.

A trial percentage describes the studied group, not the result any one person will get.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronidase injections dissolve hyaluronic acid filler — and only hyaluronic acid.

Cleveland Clinic says dissolving usually takes one to two visits, with full results in up to two weeks, and that providers ask about bee-sting allergy before using it.

Using hyaluronidase this way is off-label: those products are FDA-approved only to aid the absorption of injected fluids and drugs.

FDA adds that removing filler can require injections, surgery or other interventions with their own risks, and may be difficult or impossible — especially for permanent fillers or fillers not made of hyaluronic acid.
