Best Lip Filler: Brands and Types Compared

No approval or head-to-head trial we could verify crowns one lip filler best. The FDA approves each product separately for its own uses, and none of those approvals we could verify compares one brand against another. What the labels do settle is which products are approved for lips at all: Restylane, Restylane Silk, Juvéderm Ultra XC, Volbella XC, Restylane Kysse, Revanesse Lips+, RHA 3 and, newest, Belotero Intense (+). Here is how the brands and types compare.

Key takeaways

  • No approval or head-to-head trial we could verify ranks one lip filler as the best.
  • A lip approval belongs to a named product: Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC, Vollure XC, Voluma XC, RHA 2 and Revanesse Versa are not approved for lips.
  • Every maker lip duration claim we could verify sits at or under 1 year.
  • Radiesse's label says safety and effectiveness in the lips have not been established, and Sculptra must not be injected into the red part of the lips.
  • FDA says to treat filler injection as a medical procedure and choose a licensed provider trained in it.

Lip fillers approved in the US

In the US, a dermal filler is a medical device implant the FDA approves through premarket approval for specific uses, and the lips are one of those uses.

A lip indication belongs to one named product, not a brand as a whole — the approval order names the area, the use and a minimum age.

Here are the lip-approved products, with FDA's approval dates.

Restylane was the first US filler with a lip indication (2011); lidocaine-containing Restylane-L followed in 2012.

Belotero Intense (+) Lidocaine holds the newest lip approval, dated 2026-07-09 — we confirmed the approval in FDA's premarket file, but not the product's availability in US clinics.

Just as important for a "best" list is what is not on it. Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC is indicated only for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds and, unlike Ultra XC, has no lip indication.

Neither do Vollure XC, approved for wrinkles and folds only, or Voluma XC, whose approvals cover the cheeks, chin and temples.

RHA 2 is not approved for lips — RHA 3 is the only product in the RHA line that is.

Revanesse Versa is approved only for wrinkles and folds, so its use in lips is off-label; the lip-approved Prollenium product is Revanesse Lips+.

And RHA Redensity, which comes up in lip searches, is approved for moderate to severe dynamic perioral lines — the lines around the mouth — not the lips themselves.

No filler is approved to buy and inject yourself

FDA warns that unapproved versions of some Juvéderm products (Juvederm Ultra 2, 3 and 4) have been sold in the US, including online, and should not be used. FDA also says needle-free "hyaluron pens" are not approved for injecting filler, no filler is approved for over-the-counter use, and people should not inject themselves or buy filler online.

Volbella vs Ultra XC vs Kysse vs RHA vs Versa

These are the names stacked against each other in search results.

What a comparison can honestly rest on is each product's approval and what its maker publishes — so here is that record, product by product.

  • Juvéderm Volbella XC: approved since 2016 for lip augmentation and perioral lines, and Allergan says results in the lips can last up to 1 year with optimal treatment.
  • Juvéderm Ultra XC: approved since 2015 for the lips and perioral area, with the same Allergan "up to 1 year" lip claim — the two products' differences are covered in Juvederm for lips.
  • Restylane Kysse: approved since 2020 for lip augmentation and upper perioral lines. Its label spells out the chemistry: a BDDE-crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel of bacterial origin at 20 mg/mL with 0.3% (3 mg/mL) lidocaine, plus trial data below.
  • RHA 3: the only RHA product with a lip indication, approved in 2023 for the vermilion body, vermilion border and oral commissures in adults 22 or older. The RHA line's original 2017 approval covered moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles and folds. Teoxane and Revance say RHA fillers last up to a year in the lips.
  • Revanesse Versa: approved only for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds — using it in lips is off-label. The same maker's lip-approved product is Revanesse Lips+ (2020).

None of the facts we could verify comes from a head-to-head lip trial, so nothing above ranks these products on how they look.

Kysse is the product here with published trial figures we could verify: in its pivotal trial, 60% of treated subjects (101 of 169) were still lip-fullness responders at week 48, with treatment-related adverse events in 21.1% of subjects — most often injection-site mass (10.3%), bruising (7.6%) and nodules (5.4%).

No comparable trial figures were verified for the other products, which reflects what each maker has published, not a finding that one is safer than another.

"Up to" figures and trial data are different kinds of numbers

Allergan's lip figure is a maker maximum — "up to 1 year", "with optimal treatment". Teoxane's and Revance's is too: "up to a year in cheeks, lips, and lipstick lines". Kysse's 60% at week 48 is a measured trial percentage describing the group studied. They come from different kinds of sources and cannot be ranked against each other to crown a "longest-lasting" filler.

Soft natural vs volumizing products

Search results sort lip fillers into "soft" or "natural" products and "volumizing" or "plumping" ones.

We could not verify any label, trial or FDA category that sorts the lip-approved fillers this way, so we can't tell you which product is the soft one.

What the labels do record is chemistry: hyaluronic acid is a sugar naturally present in skin and cartilage, filler HA is sourced from bacteria or rooster combs, and it is often chemically crosslinked to last longer.

For the products with published composition, that chemistry is on the label.

Juvéderm and Restylane gels are crosslinked hyaluronic acid with lidocaine — Allergan says several Juvéderm products use its proprietary VYCROSS blend of different HA molecular weights, and Galderma describes its Restylane gels, Kysse among them, as bacterial-origin HA crosslinked with BDDE at 20 mg/mL with 0.3% lidocaine.

Those are formulation descriptions, not feel, and none of them is a verified ranking of softness, firmness or projection.

Juvéderm gels

  • Crosslinked hyaluronic acid with lidocaine
  • Several products use Allergan's VYCROSS blend of different HA molecular weights

Restylane gels

  • Bacterial-origin hyaluronic acid crosslinked with BDDE
  • 20 mg/mL HA with 0.3% lidocaine

The other filler materials sit outside this comparison on their own labels.

The calcium hydroxylapatite filler Radiesse is approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds, for HIV facial lipoatrophy, for hand volume loss, for jawline contour (Radiesse (+)) and, diluted with saline, for décolleté wrinkles — and its label says safety and effectiveness in the lips have not been established.

The poly-L-lactic acid filler Sculptra has no FDA indication for the lips, and its label says it must not be injected into the red part (vermilion) of the lips.

The PMMA filler Bellafill (renamed SANAE with FDA's approval in 2026), the only permanent US filler, is approved for nasolabial folds and moderate to severe atrophic, distensible cheek acne scars.

What lip filler is made of in general — and how treatment works — is covered in our lip filler guide.

Which lasts longest

Every maker duration claim we could verify for the lips sits at or under one year.

Allergan says Juvéderm Volbella XC and Ultra XC results in the lips can last up to 1 year with optimal treatment, and Teoxane and Revance say RHA fillers last up to a year in the lips — their 15-month figure belongs to dynamic wrinkles and folds, not lips.

In the Restylane Kysse trial, 60% of treated subjects were still lip-fullness responders at week 48.

For Restylane, Silk, Lips+ and Belotero Intense (+) we found no duration figure in the labels and trials we checked — so no product can honestly be crowned "longest-lasting" on the lips.

The figures that look longer than a year are worth reading twice: maker maximums for other areas (Voluma XC's "up to 2 years" is a cheeks figure) and the expert estimate behind the 12-to-18-month figure below.

How lip filler fades, and what changes how long it lasts, is covered properly in how long lip filler lasts.

Not 12–18 months

Cleveland Clinic's lip filler page puts the duration at 12 to 18 months, depending on age and metabolism — longer than any maker's own lip claim we verified ("up to 1 year") and further out than the Kysse trial's effectiveness results, which run through week 48. Our duration page reports it as one expert source's estimate, not as a settled figure.

Which is best for you

The label differences you can check before booking are the ones on this page: which areas and uses a product is approved for, its minimum age (over 21 for the Restylane, Juvéderm and Belotero lip approvals; 22 or older for Revanesse Lips+ and RHA 3), its maker's duration claim, and how much trial data that maker has published.

How a particular gel will look on your lips is not in any fact we could verify — that is the question to take to a licensed provider.

Over 21Minimum age: Restylane, Juvéderm and Belotero lip approvalsFDA approval orders
22 or olderMinimum age: Revanesse Lips+ and RHA 3FDA approval orders

FDA's own advice on choosing points the same way: pick a licensed health care provider with dermatology or plastic-surgery experience who is trained in filler injection, and treat filler injection as a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment.

A provider who stocks several of these products can show you the insert for the exact one they would use, with its approved use and minimum age.

The serious risk that does not depend on the brand

FDA calls unintentional injection into a blood vessel the most concerning filler risk: rare, but it can cause tissue death, vision problems including blindness, and stroke, and the damage may be permanent. The Restylane Kysse label specifically notes necrosis and scarring risk near vessels "such as in the lips". FDA says to seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, vision changes, white, gray or blue skin near the injection site, or signs of stroke.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best lip filler brand?

There is no verified ranking: the FDA approves each lip filler separately for its own use, and we found no head-to-head lip trial comparing them.

The approved products are Restylane and Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, Juvéderm Ultra XC, Volbella XC, Restylane Kysse, Revanesse Lips+, RHA 3 and Belotero Intense (+).

The differences you can check are approved uses, minimum ages, maker duration claims (the verified figures sit at or under 1 year for lips) and published trial data — Kysse is the one product here with figures we could verify.

A licensed provider can match a product to your lips.

What lip filler looks the most natural?

No label, trial or FDA category we could verify ranks lip fillers by how natural they look, so we cannot name a most-natural product. "Soft" and "natural" are not terms the labels we checked use.

What the labels record is chemistry — the Juvéderm lip gels and Restylane Kysse are crosslinked hyaluronic acid with lidocaine, per their makers — and approved uses, which differ: some products are approved for lip augmentation only, others also for perioral lines.

Ask a provider what the insert for the product they use actually says.

Is Versa FDA-approved for lips?

No. Revanesse Versa is approved only for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, so using it in the lips is off-label — not on any current US label for that product.

The lip-approved product from the same maker, Prollenium, is Revanesse Lips+, approved in 2020 for lip augmentation in patients 22 or older.

If a quote mentions Versa for your lips, ask which product would actually be in the syringe.
