Juvederm Products Explained: Ultra, Volbella, Vollure, Voluma, Volux

Allergan describes the Juvéderm line as a collection of six hyaluronic acid fillers — Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Volbella XC, Vollure XC, Voluma XC and Volux XC — approved for cheeks, chin, temples, smile lines, lips, under-eyes and jawline. What separates the types is the area each product is approved to treat, when FDA approved it, and how long the maker says results hold. Here is each product, one by one.

Key takeaways

  • The Juvéderm types differ by the area each is FDA-approved to treat, not just by name.
  • Only Ultra XC and Volbella XC are approved for the lips; Ultra Plus XC and Vollure XC in the lips are off-label.
  • Volbella XC is the only Juvéderm filler approved for under-eye hollows, and Volux XC the only one for the jawline.
  • Allergan's stated durations range from up to 1 year to up to 2 years, depending on product and area.
  • No US filler is approved for the nose, forehead or glabella.

Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC

Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC share one approved use: injection into the facial tissue for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds that run from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth.

Allergan's approved-uses wording gives both products the same indication on this point.

The documented difference between them is the lip.

FDA approved Juvéderm Ultra XC on September 30, 2015 for injection into the lips and the perioral area — the area around the lips — for lip augmentation in adults over 21, adding to its wrinkles-and-folds use.

Ultra Plus XC has no lip indication, so Ultra Plus XC in the lips is off-label: not on any current US label for that product.

Juvéderm Ultra XC

  • Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
  • Lips and perioral area, approved September 30, 2015
  • Lips: up to 1 year, per Allergan

Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC

  • Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
  • No lip indication: lip use is off-label
  • Smile lines: up to 1 year, per Allergan

Allergan's stated duration is up to 1 year in the smile lines for Ultra Plus XC, and up to 1 year in the lips for Ultra XC, in each case with optimal treatment.

We could not confirm any other difference between the two gels from the sources we checked, so gel consistency is a question to ask a licensed provider.

Not approved: Juvederm Ultra 2, 3 and 4

FDA warns that unapproved versions of Juvederm, sold as Juvederm Ultra 2, 3 and 4, have been sold in the US, including online, and should not be used. They are not part of the approved US collection described on this page.

Juvederm Volbella XC

Volbella XC carries approved uses in two very different parts of the face.

The first came on May 31, 2016: injection into the lips for lip augmentation and for correction of perioral lines — the lines around the mouth — in adults over 21.

The second came on May 28, 2021, when FDA approved Volbella XC to improve infraorbital hollowing — under-eye hollows — in adults over 21.

That made it the first US filler approved for under-eye hollows; Restylane Eyelight, Belotero Balance (+) and RHA Redensity Eye have followed since.

Naming the product is what decides whether an under-eye treatment is on-label: Volbella XC is approved there, while the other Juvéderm products have no under-eye indication, so using them in that area is off-label — not on any current US label for those products.

May 31, 2016Volbella XC approved: lips and perioral linesFDA approval record
May 28, 2021Volbella XC approved: under-eye hollowsFDA approval record

Allergan's stated duration is up to 1 year with optimal treatment for Volbella XC in the lips, and up to 1 year for the under-eyes.

Juvederm Vollure XC

Vollure XC was approved on March 17, 2017 for injection into the mid to deep dermis for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, in adults over 21.

Like Ultra Plus XC, it has no lip indication, so Vollure XC in the lips is off-label.

It carries the longest duration figure Allergan states anywhere in the collection except Voluma XC in the cheeks: up to 18 months in the smile lines with optimal treatment.

Allergan's approved-uses wording gives Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC and Vollure XC the same wrinkles-and-folds indication, and we could not find a published head-to-head trial comparing the three.

Which one suits a given fold is a question for a licensed provider.

Juvederm Voluma XC

Voluma XC carries three approved indications.

FDA approved it on October 22, 2013 for deep (subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal) injection for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume deficit in the midface in adults over 21.

Chin augmentation, to improve the chin profile, followed on June 12, 2020.

On October 6, 2023, FDA approved supraperiosteal injection into the temple region to improve moderate to severe temple hollowing.

Allergan states a duration for each area: up to 2 years in the cheeks, up to 1 year in the chin and up to 13 months in the temples, all with optimal treatment.

The 2-year figure belongs to the cheeks only — it is not a stated duration for the chin or the temples.

Allergan's important safety information also notes that Voluma XC safety was not studied in patients under 35 or over 65 for cheek augmentation, under 22 or over 80 for chin augmentation, or under 32 or over 82 for temple augmentation.

For the cheek and chin data in detail, see Juvederm Voluma for Cheeks and Chin.

TemplesOctober 6, 2023Up to 13 monthsUnder 32 or over 82
The temple approval is 2023, not 2024

Some sources date Voluma XC's temple approval to 2024. FDA's approval record for the temple indication is dated October 6, 2023.

Juvederm Volux XC

Volux XC is the jawline product of the collection.

FDA approved it on July 29, 2022 for subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal injection to improve jawline definition in adults over 21 with moderate to severe loss of jawline definition.

No other product in the six-filler collection carries a jawline indication.

Allergan's stated duration is up to 1 year in the jawline with optimal treatment.

Which Juvederm filler for which area?

The chart below brings the collection together: each product's approved use and, where Allergan states one, its duration.

Everything in the approved-use column is on-label for that product.

Uses outside the column are off-label — not on any current US label for that product — and that includes Ultra Plus XC or Vollure XC in the lips.

Some areas no filler is approved for at all: FDA's approval-order file for fillers, checked October 2026, shows no US dermal filler with an approved indication for the nose, the forehead or the glabella (the area between the eyebrows), so those uses are off-label for every filler, Juvéderm included.

SKINVIVE by JuvédermCheek skin smoothness; neck linesNot in Allergan's published duration list

Each duration is a manufacturer claim: it is tied to the product and area named, describes what results can do with optimal treatment, and is not a prediction for any individual.

One more product sits alongside the six: SKINVIVE by Juvéderm, an intradermal hyaluronic acid "skin booster," was approved on May 11, 2023 to improve cheek skin smoothness and on June 11, 2026 to reduce neck lines, in adults over 21.

Allergan's consumer site counts six fillers in the Juvéderm collection and does not list SKINVIVE among them.

Which product fits which plan is a decision for you and a licensed provider together: the approved uses above are the documented starting point.

For what treatment involves, what Juvéderm costs and how to choose an injector, the Juvederm guide pulls the pieces together.

The most concerning filler risk

Every product on this page is injected into the face. FDA calls unintentional injection into a blood vessel the most concerning risk with fillers: rare, but it can cause tissue death (necrosis), vision problems including blindness, and stroke, and the damage may be permanent. FDA says to seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, vision changes, a white, gray or blue appearance of skin near the injection site, or any signs of stroke.

Frequently asked questions

How many Juvederm fillers are there?

Allergan describes the Juvéderm collection as six FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers — Voluma XC, Volux XC, Vollure XC, Volbella XC, Ultra Plus XC and Ultra XC — all containing lidocaine.

One more Juvéderm-branded product sits alongside the six: SKINVIVE, approved in 2023 for cheek skin smoothness and in 2026 for neck lines.

Allergan's consumer site counts six fillers and does not list SKINVIVE among them.

What is the difference between Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC?

Both are indicated for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds.

Ultra XC also holds a lip indication: FDA approved it in 2015 for lip augmentation in the lips and perioral area.

Ultra Plus XC has no lip indication.

Allergan's stated duration is up to 1 year in the smile lines for Ultra Plus XC and up to 1 year in the lips for Ultra XC.

We could not confirm any other difference between the two gels from the sources we checked.

Which Juvederm filler holds results the longest?

The longest figure Allergan states is for Voluma XC in the cheeks: up to 2 years with optimal treatment.

Next come Vollure XC in the smile lines at up to 18 months and Voluma XC in the temples at up to 13 months.

Every other stated figure in the collection is up to 1 year.

Each is a manufacturer claim tied to one product and area, not an estimate of what any individual will see.

Is under-eye Juvederm off-label?

It depends on the product.

Juvéderm Volbella XC has been approved to improve infraorbital hollowing — under-eye hollows — since May 2021, the first US filler approved for that area.

The other Juvéderm products have no under-eye indication, so using them there is off-label: not on any current US label for those products.
