Who gets Microneedling?

The Aesthetic Society's 2022 data say women accounted for 95% of all aesthetic procedures (surgical and nonsurgical combined) in its databank. [2]

The American Academy of Dermatology says acne is the most common skin condition in the US, affecting up to 50 million Americans each year — a figure it sources to the AAD/SID "Burden of Skin Diseases" study of 2004 data (published 2006). [8]

Among 1,972 acne patients seen by 120 US dermatologists in one week, 43% (843) had acne scarring, and 69% of those with scars had only mild or moderate acne at the visit (Tan, Kang, Leyden; J Drugs Dermatol 2017). [9]

How many microneedling procedures are done each year?

The Aesthetic Society estimates 152,064 microneedling procedures in 2022 by aesthetic plastic surgeons nationally, up 23% from 123,728 in 2021 (2019: 133,342; 2020: 96,558). [2]

Grand View Research estimated the global microneedling market at USD 472.34 million in 2020 and projected USD 992.49 million by 2028 (7.9% CAGR) — an old (2021) forecast that is widely recycled; if used, say "a 2021 Grand View Research forecast". [7]

How common are microneedling side effects and complications?

An openFDA MAUDE query on 2026-10-22 for product code QAI (the FDA classification for non-RF microneedling devices) returned 61 adverse-event reports in total: 47 coded injury, 12 malfunction, 2 other, and no deaths (data current to 2026-10-13). [3]

Of the 61 MAUDE reports under microneedling product code QAI, 28 name the Ellacor or Cytrellis micro-coring system (a different procedure that removes tiny cores of skin); about 33 concern other devices, mostly microneedling pens such as SkinPen (13 reports by brand-name search), RejuvaPen and Dermapen, but also RF microneedling devices and plasma pens (2026 data). [4]

What is the success rate of microneedling?

In a 2014 JAMA Dermatology randomized split-face trial (Alam et al.; 20 enrolled, 15 completed), three needling-roller sessions 2 weeks apart significantly improved acne scar scores at 6 months; participants rated a 41% mean improvement on the treated side, mean pain was 1.08 of 10, and no adverse events were reported (2010 data). [6]

A 2026 meta-analysis (Agu-Jefferson et al., Cureus; 11 studies, 713 participants) found no significant difference between microneedling and chemical peels in achieving clinically significant (≥50%) acne-scar improvement (RR 0.97), though microneedling was more likely to give any improvement (RR 1.79). [10]

A 2024 network meta-analysis of 24 randomized trials (1,546 participants) found microneedling combined with chemical peels gave the best acne-scar improvement and satisfaction, combinations beat microneedling alone, and side effects (redness, pain, hyperpigmentation) did not differ significantly between treatments (Li et al., Arch Dermatol Res). [11]

These numbers come from outside sources, not our directory; each one links to its source below.

• ASPS's 2024 statistics are extrapolated from a questionnaire sent to over 5,000 board-certified ASPS members (almost 1,000 responses) plus CosmetAssure data, with a stated ±4.62% margin of error at 95% confidence. [1]
• The Aesthetic Society reports an average charge of $196 for a chemical peel (down 10% vs 2021) and $302 for microneedling (down 4%) in 2022 among its surgeon practices — surgeon-practice charges, not med spa prices. [2]
• The most frequently coded patient problems in MAUDE microneedling (QAI) reports were skin discoloration (10 reports), scar tissue (9), erythema (7), and hyperpigmentation, pain and skin infection (6 each) (2026 data). [5]
• A 2026 Bayesian network meta-analysis of 56 RCTs (1,488 patients) on moderate-to-severe atrophic acne scars concluded combination therapies generally beat single treatments; fractional CO2 laser plus subcision or PRP was most consistent, and microneedling plus PRP ranked among the best for significant-improvement rate (Ou et al., Aesthetic Plast Surg). [12]

What these numbers can't tell you

• Counts are Google Maps listings we classify as med spas, so they include dermatology and plastic surgery practices that offer med spa treatments and exclude spas without a Google listing.
• A treatment counts when the spa's Google listing or website names it, so a spa with an outdated menu can be over- or under-counted.
• Credentials count only clinicians a spa names with a credential (MD, DO, NP, PA, RN) on its own website, so spas that leave their team off their website are left out of those shares.
• Prices are published prices on med spa websites: we keep each spa's lowest posted price, which often is an introductory or member price, so the typical bill is higher.
• We hold no patient records: every figure describes providers, their listings and their Google reviews, not who gets treated.
• Ratings and review themes are Google's, as shown on each listing on the snapshot date; Google filters some reviews and does not publish how.
